Ranike asks women to utilise govt’s dairy training initiative

Bathinda : The sixth edition of the five-day National Livestock Championship opened in Muktsar on Wednesday. A large number of breeders thronged the venue from different parts of the country.

Declaring the championship open in the sports ground, Animal Husbandry Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike appealed to the womenfolk to utilise state’s initiatives.

He mentioned that the dairy farming training was a gesture of the Punjab government under which 300 women were being imparted training without any charges. The Minister said that women who were interested in opening dairy in their villages were entitled to get various subsidies and other help from the state. Ranike also informed the livestock breeders that the total livestock in state had increased 10.33 per cent due to which there was an increase in milk production from 93.89 lakh tonnes to 97.24 lakh tonnes in the state during the last five years.

The Minister claimed that the concentrated efforts of the state government also led to the noticeable 35 per cent increase in the number of cows and 42 per cent of pigs in the state.

Ranike mentioned that Punjab with 961 gram per person milk production was on the top position. Similarly, with the total production of 3,791 million eggs per year, the state is number one in the country,” he added. Disclosing the efforts of the state government to improve the infrastructure, the Minister said that with the expenditure of Rs 20 crore the buildings of veterinary hospitals and dispensaries were being renovated.

About the field vacancies in the department, Ranike claimed that as many as 125 veterinary officers and 175 veterinary inspectors were being recruited. Meanwhile, the Dairy Development Department officials also informed the public about their new schemes and their benefits with appeal to adopt animal rearing as a subsidiary trade of the traditional agricultural activities.
