Milk producers trade blows, run riot at Sabar Dairy meeting, 2 cops hurt

Clashes erupted at the annual general meeting (AGM) of the milk producers at Sabarkantha Thursday, with members trading blows prompting police to lob tear gas shells and resort to mild lathicharge.

The AGM was held to discuss the issue of productivity and declare profit and loss statement.

Trouble began when it was announced that Sabar Dairy had suffered a loss of Rs 40 crore. Milk producers alleged that though the dairy had earned won huge profits running into crores of rupees last year, the board was not making the figures public.

The heated exchange among members soon turned into a fisticuffs. When police arrived, some angry members reportedly attacked police and pelted stones on police vans. They also vandalised 20 vehicles parked at the venue and torched the mandap that was erected for the meeting.

The police said they fired six tear gas shells and resorted to mild lathicharge to control the unruly mob.

One person was injured during the lathicharge and was shifted to hospital for treatment.

The incident also left two police constables injured. The situation was brought under control in an hour.

The police have registered a case and are probing.
