India is likely to face a serious supply – demand mismatch and gradually turn into a net importer of milk and milk products, said Rajiv Mitra, MD, Govind Milk, on the eve of World Milk Day on June 1. He said, while sustained growth of the Indian economy and rise in purchasing power has led to increased milk consumption and demand for dairy products, there are impediments in the way of growth such as lack of cold-chain facilities. “India needs to have more colleges and universities churning out quality dairy technologists and professionals,” Mitra said.
