MUKTSAR: An HF (Holstein-Friesian) breed cow, owned by Harpreet Singh Hundal of Nurpore Hakima village of Moga, yielded 66.713 kg in a day and created a national record at the 8th National Livestock Championship being held on Monday.
The cow has broken the earlier record of 61.800 kg of milk set by a cow, owned by Daljit Singh, last year.
Two more cows of Hundal won the second and seventh slots in the milk-yielding contest. He will get `1.5 lakh cash prize for the first position.
A jersey cow of Varinder Mohan Sharma of Morinda yielded 39.366 kg milk and the Neeli Ravi of Surinder Singh from village Bhagu of Muktsar yielded 18.444 kg milk and secured first place in their respective categories.
Meanwhile, Hundal said that the livestock championship had increased awareness among the animal rearers and the giving away of cash prizes had encouraged them. He said his dairy farm had 140 cows that yielded around 2,000 liters of milk daily. He sells milk to Nestle company.
A graduate, Harpreet has been pratcising dairy farming for the past 10 years and his brother Harmanpreet Singh helps him in the business. He gives his winning cow 15 kg feed and fodder daily.
